SUTCLIFFE'S BAASSKAP
There is a cyclical pattern to events in history. In 1994 President Mandela vowed that
South Africa would never again be subjected to the baasskap which had so characterised
the decades of National Party rule.
But in 2007 eThekwini's ANC Municipal Manager, Michael Sutcliffe, has broken Mandela's
promise. His statement in the Daily News of April 30 that regardless of the objections of
people and their opposition to the ANC's list of proposed name changes, those changes
will go ahead, is nothing else but old Nat-style baasskap.
If that is the case, then why bother to stipulate May 11 as the deadline by which objections
must be submitted ? Cut out the lip-service to democratic procedure. Sutcliffe's latest
posturing on the issue is also indicative of the effect the massive groundswell of opposition
to renaming is having on him and his ANC cronies: they have succeeded in uniting
opposition to their baasskap. Well done !
Just as the ANC burnt their passes in the 1950s in opposition to apartheid, Sutcliffe and
his comrades should not be surprised when in 2007 fair-minded people refuse to accept
forced name changes. Baasskap has never proved good for nation-building.
