PROPOSED AIRPORT NAME-CHANGE: AN UNACCEPTABLE
IDEOLOGICAL IMPOSITION
The proposal by elements of the SACP within the ANC to re-name the existing Durban Airport
after a communist revolutionary, Moses Mabhida, is a blatant ideological imposition by a small
section of the population that flies in the face of reconciliation.
This is the view of Democratic Alliance councillor Duncan Du Bois. ' In 1994 it was agreed to
rename all existing airports after the cities or towns which they served. This was a reasonable
move in depoliticising public facilities. However, the ANC recently reneged on that with its
unilateral decision to rename Johannesburg International after one of its heroes - Oliver
Tambo. Now the same stunt is being pulled with Durban International,' he said.
' Not only is this unacceptable and undemocratic but the way in which the issue was placed
before the Council at its final meeting for the year illustrates, once again, that there are two
sets of regulations: one exclusively for the ANC and the other set for the rest of us.'
' Communist Party councillor N F Shabalala raised the name-change idea verbally at the end
of the Exco meeting the day before the Council meeting. It was not a formal part of the
published agenda. Yet on the strength of that it was placed as part of a report from Exco and
tabled at the Council's December 7 meeting. With the exception of an emergency, no other
party in Council would be permitted to act in that way as it is in conflict with the rules.'
' Despite the other ideological name changes that have been imposed, Stanger is still
Stanger ( look in the postal code book), the Southern Freeway is still the Southern Freeway
and Durban Airport will still be Durban Airport,' said Du Bois
