WARD COMMITTEE IS A SHAM
Following a report from a Clairwood resident that certain individuals were going around
claiming to be ward committee members, Councillor Duncan Du Bois has questioned the
Office of the Speaker in Ethekwini municipality as to the legitimacy of these members.
' To date there have been two attempts in Ward 66 ( November 18 and February 11) to
elect a ward committee. Both have been unsuccessful. The Office of the Speaker knows
this. There is no legitimate ward committee in Ward 66. Yet in a letter dated March 28,
the manager of the Speaker's office, Desmond Myeza, claimed a ward committee did exist
in my ward,' said Cllr Du Bois.
' I have challenged Myeza to provide the following evidence, as required by section 73 of
the Municipal Structures Act, to support his claim:
1) A copy of the advertisement announcing the new date, time and venue of the ward
committee election;
2) A copy of the attendance register of the meeting signed by at least 100 eligible voters;
3) A copy of the minutes of that meeting showing the names of proposers and seconders
of candidates for election to the committee;
4) A letter explaining why I was never consulted about all of this, as the Act requires.
' In that the idea of a ward committee is to promote democracy and transparency at
community level, I find it disgusting that the Office of the Speaker apparently sees fit to
accept as legitimate in Ward 66 a ward committee that has not been constituted in
accordance with the prescribed procedures.'
' Accordingly, I ask that residents of Ward 66 disregard individuals who claim to be
members of a ward committee in Ward 66. Their claim is illegitimate and I will have nothing
to do with them,' said Cllr Du Bois.
