SADTU INTIMIDATION IS OUTRAGEOUS
As an educator of long standing at a local high school I find Sadtu's intimidation tactics
outrageous. A matric exam was stopped after 15 mins on June 18 when the school received
word that a busload of Sadtu types was on its way. Police advised that the school be cleared
immediately. By noon the school was empty and closed. This is a crying shame. An exam
paper has been lost, children have been destabilised, irreplaceable time has been lost.
Sadtu have the gall the call themselves ' democratic,' yet they see fit to deny that right to
others.Who do they think they are to prescribe when exams can or cannot be written ?
Their use of coercion and intimidation in the face of the request by provincial education
authorities for schools to complete their mid-term exams has alienated any remaining
sympathy people might have had for their cause. Such conduct is totalitarian and quite
unbecoming of those who call themselves professional and who claim to espouse the cause
of learning.
At the same time, however, it is deplorable that those elected to govern have capitulated to
the tactics of the militant minority within Sadtu. It is pathetic that a government which spends
R66 billion on an arms deal to improve the defences of the country is incapable of defending
learners and educators from the crude intimidatory tactics of a few busloads of ruffians hired
to disrupt schools.
Sadtu's insistence that schools remain closed and that no exams are written makes
nonsense of the holy writ in the Freedom Charter which proclaims that ' the doors of
learning shall be opened to all.'
