RATEPAYERS URGED TO KEEP UP PRESSURE AGAINST
RENAMING PROPOSALS
Bluff ward councillor Duncan Du Bois has urged ratepayers to keep up the pressure of
protest against the street renaming policy. ' We cannot allow what amounts to crude
baasskap to be rammed down our throats. Every aspect of this exercise is flawed and the
municipal manager Dr Sutcliffe needs to hear this from as many people as possible,' said
Cllr Du Bois.
' This is not just about objecting to the proposed renaming of one or two streets. Whilst
only Edwin Swales VC Drive is affected as far as the Bluff is concerned, and reasonable
people should be sufficiently outraged about that, it is the selective, unilateral and arbitrary
way in which streets across the Metro have been singled out to be renamed after ANC and
communist party heros,' he said..
' There has been no community participation in this exercise. A list of names drawn up by
three people has been presented as a fait accompli. That is utterly unacceptable.
Renaming streets after adherents of a failed ideology, namely communism, is an insult to
the free society that South Africa is today. Discarding names of those who are part of our
history and heritage is in contempt of the preamble of the constitution which acknowledges
that their role must be appreciated and that we are a diverse society,' said Cllr Du Bois.
' The renaming exercise as it is being promoted is undemocratic and wilfully vindictive. I
refuse to call Edwin Swales VC Drive anything else but Edwin Swales VC Drive.
He was a brave man who gave his life in World War 2 against totalitarian Nazism. Dr
Sutcliffe needs to be told that Bluff people do not want him to mess with the names
of our streets such as Edwin Swales VC Dve. ' said Cllr Du Bois.
' I appeal to all readers of the SUN to send their objections to P O BOX 1014 Durban 4000
or to fax them to 031 311-2170 or email them to sutcliffem@durban.gov.za
The deadline is May 11.'

OBJECTION TO PROPOSED STREET AND BUILDING RENAMING LIST
I, the undersigned ratepayer, object to the above proposal on the grounds that:
1 Proper community consultation and participation has not taken place;
2 The names of many on the list of proposals are inappropriate. Renaming streets and
buildings after such people will not promote nation-building;
3 Communism is a failed ideology. The majority of South Africans have always rejected
it and therefore to attempt to commemorate those associated with totalitarianism has no
place in a free society;
4 The list reflects the thinking of a single political party. As such it ignores the heritage
and diversity within the Metro;
5 The selective and arbitrary way in which streets have been singled out for renaming
is not only undemocratic but wilfully vindictive.
