SOME POSITIVES EMERGE FROM TRANSNET PRESENTATION
Whilst nothing is cast in stone, Bluff residents can take heart from some of the points
that emerged from Transnet's public presentation on July 31 concerning possible
expansion of container facilities in the Bayhead area.
The first point of note is that wharfage expansion in the Bayhead area is not a fait
accompli. Transnet is looking at prospects in Richards Bay and Coega. It also transpires
that the Durban option is not the cheapest.
The second significant point of note is that Transnet readily concedes that it needs to
ratchet up the percentage of rail usage for the movement of containers from 20% to 50%
and from there to grow that to 80%. In other words, the pendulum needs to swing radically
away from road transport. This is welcome news as the congestion and hazards posed by
container trucking have become intolerable.
The third positive development is that the idea of a container dryport at Cato Ridge is
enjoying critical attention by Transnet. It is seen as a probable development in the event of
the Durban option being selected.
Finally, because Durban will have exhausted the availability of space for container
operations by 2010, Transnet is under huge pressure to finalise its decision and to get
busy with the necessary development, be that in Durban, Richards Bay or Coega.
In short, down the line there does appear to be the prospect of some relief from the torrid
container traffic .
