| R16 MILLION TO BE SPENT ON REPAIRS TO BLUFF BEACHES ' Whilst concerns as to the storm-damaged infrastructure along Ansteys beach are understandable, repair and rehabilitation plans have been approved by the Council and continue to be implemented,' says Bluff ward councillor Duncan Du Bois. 'Some R16 million has been approved for this task and has been allocated as follows: Ansteys beach: washaway of four stormwater outfalls: R400,000; 220m stretch of concrete retaining wall: R4,8 million; beach access walkway: Foreshore Dve: R380,000. Brighton beach: Dolphin Lifesaving Club area: erosion along parking lot, stormwater replacement, road rehabilitation: R4,3 million; Foreshore Dve: road rehabilitation north and south of Cave Rock:R3,95 million; tidal pool and paddling pool infrastructure: R2,2 million. ' The issue of funding has resulted in delays in the carrying out of the work. Submissions were made to both the Council's insurers and to National Disaster Management. Some R98 million is involved in repairs to beaches from Umhlodti to Winklespruit as a result of ocean damage caused during the March 19 -20 storm as well as a subsequent storm between July 29 and 31,' said Cllr Du Bois. ########### |
| ARCHIVE MATERIAL STATEMENT CONCERNING INFRASTRUCTURE REPAIRS TO THE BEACHES AND FORESHORE DRIVE May'07 The barrier on Foreshore Dve has been relocated to a point about 100 metres from Cave Rock. This makes Brighton beach more accessible and takes the pressure off the bottleneck that existed at Ansteys beach, particularly as far as anti-social behaviour is concerned. It is not possible to specify time frames as regards the road repair. It depends on what type of repair is undertaken. The new coastal management laws are very stringent about building along high water marks. In that rising ocean levels are a reality, the Metro is going to have to re-think the location of its own infrastructure. In terms of that legislation insurers are unlikely to pay out in the event of future ocean damage. Last week's spring tides caused further undermining and structural weakening of property and infrastructure up and down the coast. Yet the swell was moderate, unlike over the March 18 -19 period. Next month sees another equinox and the prospect of higher than normal tides. ############## |
| 29 July'07 PRESSURE ON ANSTEY'S BEACH TO EASE: ROAD CLOSURE TO BE RELOCATED The pressure on Ansteys beach is set to ease with the relocation of the existing road closure to a point some 170 metres north of Cave Rock. Omesh Ori, Metro Area Projects technician, has informed ward councillor Duncan Du Bois that the relocation of the barrier would take place by Friday, August 3. ' A contract for the rehabilitation of the road to Brighton beach has been awarded and work is expected to be underway within two weeks, ' said Cllr Du Bois. ' Although it puts paid to the idea of a nature trail, it does mean that the traffic pressure on Ansteys beach will be eased as well as the congregation of anti-social elements. Unfortunately those elements who used to make a nuisance of themselves at Brighton beach have been inflicting themselves and their conduct on the residents of Foreshore Dve at Ansteys beach.' ' Relocating them southwards will bring relief to the Ansteys area but it is not the solution. Only firm steps by the police, such as were taken against informal traders in the city some weeks ago, will rid us of this anti-social scourge. Many have experienced the tranquillity of the beaches south of Ansteys since the road closure in March. That's what life can be like when the mobility of certain elements is restricted.' ' I fully support the efforts by the CPF chairman Carl Knauff to have security along Foreshore Dve beefed up and for the police, both Metro and SAPS, to be proactive in clamping down on those elements whose presence there has nothing to do with angling, diving or surfing but simply to abuse the facilities and to violate the bylaws as regards noise, parking and braaing,' said Cllr Du Bois. |
| ARCHIVE MATERIAL Our Coastline & Our Beahces . 8 June'07 ...... TURN FORESHORE DVE SOUTH OF ANSTEYS INTO A NATURE TRAIL Seeing the pictures of the graffiti at Brighton beach reminds me of the idea my son has about the future of Brighton & Cave Rock etc: make it a nature trail. Keep the road permanently closed at Ansteys. Let nature grow back. In the interests of fitness and health encourage people to walk to Brighton and Cave. That will stop all the drunken binges and smashed glass and traffic chaos during summer weekends. Re-establish the idea of family picnic outings. It's going to cost millions to re-establish the road from Ansteys to Brighton, to say nothing of the damage to the other amenities there. Who says we need all that anyway ? The nature trail idea will mean that those beaches will be for those who want to use them as nature intended. It will cut out the trash who hang out at beaches for socially deviant reasons.
