SHOULD BRIGHON BEACH BECOME PART OF A NATURE TRAIL ?
It's been nearly three months since six metre swells pounded our coastline and left a bill of
destruction that runs into millions. There's still no word on whether the natonal government
will declare the ocean-ravaged coastline a disaster area and provide
money to repair the damage.
Given the realities of global warming and rising ocean levels should we not be thinking
along new lines as regards where and what we build on our coastline ?
In terms of the new Coastal Management Bill, there should be buffer zone of 100 metres
above the high tide mark. This places serious question marks over the road and amenities
infrastructure along Foreshore Dve between Ansteys and Brighton beaches.
Should we not be heeding the lesson nature gave us back in March and realise that
re-establishing road access to Brighton beach, however desirable, may not only be legally
inadvisable but also defiant of the ocean's power ?
In the light of the above, should it not be accepted that: (1) The closure of Foreshore Dve
at the point where it is currently blocked off should become permanent ? (2) The road
beyond that is broken up instead of attempts being made to repair it and that nature is
allowed to grow back? (3) A nature trail is established for those who want to reach Cave
rock and beach spots beyond that ?

Heightened tensions are good for SA
•Fri, 8 Jun 2007
One of the paradoxes of good political health is that the political climate experiences
tension and momentum, for such conditions are conducive to political change.
Developments on the South African political scene would seem to indicate that a significant
cycle of tension and momentum is under way.
