| If there is any doubt as to why we have banded together, and stamp out crime, I think we must look further down the line to see what will happen if we don’t! Businesses will be affected. All businesses like tourist establishments, restaurants, Real Estate companies, petrol stations, corner tea rooms etc. are going to be affected. There is a chain reaction when money stops flowing into an area and its businesses. It affects ALL businesses. It affects service related companies, your plumbers, electricians, builders, pest control, mechanics etc etc. etc. When businesses profits are affected, they obviously spend less on other services which means that a lot of other businesses also suffer. This chain reaction obviously continues down the line until everyone is affected in some way or other. The property market will also suffer. If the Bluff is seen as a suburb which is becoming a dangerous place, it obviously affects the selling price of homes. (Parts of Montclair are a perfect example of how a perception of an area can affect the value of homes) If the CRIME, drinking, violence, speeding etc. is not stopped now, every single home owner is going to feel the affects of this trend. The property market on Foreshore Drive was a perfect example, the properties prices down there suffered immensely until we got the beaches back to normal. This is not something that may happen in the future or a thumb suck theory, it is already happening! One of the biggest attractions for people purchasing property on the Bluff is the fact that it is (or was) known as one of the safest suburbs, but this is changing! If this continues, it will affect all property owners! The market is very difficult as it is without crime compounding the problem. Try to convince a buyer to purchase your property when you or your neighbours have ten foot walls with razor wire, electric fencing, Alcatraz type security doors and 10 Rotveillers. The picture tells the story. Crime affects everyone There are other aspects that affect everyone financially as well as psychologically. Think about the horror of having someone breaking into your house while you are asleep or getting hijacked in your driveway. Think about your car getting broken into, your garage getting broken into or even just your hosepipe getting stolen. All this affects you financially. You must replace stolen items, replace your car radio/ windows, you must pay the excess on your insurance and your premiums go up. The financial burden of having to put up higher walls, electric fencing, hiring security companies, installing alarms affects all of us. (Also part of the financial chain reaction) Take a drive around some of the other suburbs where the residents sat back thinking that crime wouldn’t affect them and you will be alarmed at how some people have to live. They are total prisoners in their own homes. They have had to spend a fortune fortifying their properties. The Bluff hasn’t reached that stage yet and we certainly don’t want it to! Crime affects everyone financially and it takes away our freedom. It is not all gloom and doom though because the Bluff is still safe compared to most other suburbs and that’s why we have to act now and keep it that way! The fact is, with a bit of input from everyone, we can make it even safer. The Bluff is one of the most beautiful suburbs in the country. It’s still very green with lots of small wildlife. We have miles and miles of excellent beaches enjoyed by scores of fishermen, surfers, divers and bathers. We have a world class golf course with all its greenery and natural ponds. We have excellent sports clubs of every discipline. We have excellent shopping centers. In short, this is the kind of suburb that a person feels grateful to live in. Only one thing can spoil our suburb and that’s crime! Its up to us as to whether we remain living in this beautiful suburb with peace of mind or whether we want to see 6 foot walls with razor wire going up, people putting electric fencing around their homes, turning their homes into fortresses, too scared to go outside and enjoy the beauty of our suburb. Whenever I drive around the Bluff one thing still makes me smile and that is too see children playing in the side streets, riding bikes, kicking a ball etc., without their parents having to worry. The Bluff must be one a few suburbs left where children can all meet in a side street and play safely but this is changing, residents are getting attacked so we have to take action to preserve the Bluff as we know it. It’s up to us to keep it that way! The police at Brighton Beach are doing a good job but the Bluff is a big place so we need to protect ourselves and help the police to help us. Thanks Rake Jeeves |
