SDB Learners given ticket of a lifetime
SDB Learners given ticket of a
lifetime
Fourteen learners have been selected to
participate in Project Recruit which is a skills
development programme that focuses on
First Line Maintenance for young people
between the ages of 18-35.  It was launched
as a pilot project last year and it remains a
partnership between the South Durban Basin
Area Based Management and Professional
Skills Management (PSM).

Noma Sokhela, SDB Local Economic
Development Manager said “skills shortage
is a problem in the country in general and in
the Basin in particular.  Through Project
Recruit, we want to make a small
contribution in ensuring that we equip young
people with skills required by most
industries in the Basin.  She said, “we are
encouraged to see that all 16 learners who
participated in the programme last year have
been absorbed by reputable manufacturing
companies in the Basin. I would like to
appeal to businesses to come forward and
partner with us”, said Sokhela.
Lee D’Eathe, SDB Area Manager said, “it is
everybody’s responsibility to contribute
towards job creation.  As the South Durban
Basin Team we will continue to find
innovative ways to address skills shortage
and help young people to find employment.
The truth is that we cannot do this only by
ourselves, we need more partners in taking
this process forward”, commented D’Eathe.
According to Mini Mlambo, PSM Trainer,
learners have been exposed to theoretical
and practical side of the training and they are
enjoying the programme.  She said, “the
programme entails first line maintenance
practices on machines, storing materials
and identifying electrical and mechanical
faults.  They are also taught basic
requirements of Occupational Safety and
Health Act, duties and responsibilities in the
workplace as well as understanding accident
prevention, added Mlambo.
She said, “learners are also exposed to the
assembling of components using 2 ton and
50 ton pressers. At the end of the intense two
and half month course,  learners will have to
complete a Portfolio of Evidence (PoE), which
will be evaluated by Merseta for competency
in order for them to attain the 30 credits
towards their NQF Level 3 Automotive
Component Manufacturing and Assembly
Qualification, concluded Mlambo.

The SDB ABM and PSM encourage
companies wanting to participate in Project
Recruit to contact Mini Mlambo on 031 207
