Dalton Precinct gets revitalized…

The South Durban Basin Area Based
Management Programme of the Ethekwini
Municipality is currently implementing a
programme that is aimed at the regeneration
of the Dalton Precinct in partnership with
various stakeholders.

The Dalton area, which comprises the Dalton
Hostel; Dalton beer hall and the Dalbridge
Station; has a rich history which in its heyday
was a vibrant hub of activity of traditional skin
and herb trade, art, music and culture.

Eurakha Singh, SDB Social Development
Manager said “Dalton area has had some
challenges in recent years due to neglect
and loss of business confidence. She said
that the aim of this project is revive interest in
the area and restore the area to a safe,
vibrant place. South Durban Basin Area
Based Management Team in partnership
with line departments from eThekwini
Municipality is committed to improving the
social / environmental / economic conditions
within the entire precinct”.
Singh said, “with the upgrade of the Hostel
blocks, it is apt that the surrounding precinct
be improved in order to uplift the whole area.
Some resulting project proposals already
implemented or underway are the installation
of CCTV, pavement and intersection
upgrade, as well Beer Hall Redevelopment.”

The Dalton Beerhall, owned by the Provincial
Department of Economic development, is a
specific site which was identified as a key
intervention area for mixed use development
possibly including economic trade, retail and
tourism opportunities and social functions.
A Business Retention and Expansion
seminar is being held on the 23rd April 2008,
